Tamil Nadu Government has allowed Vedanta's Sterlite plant in Tuticorin to re-open for four months only for the production of Oxygen. Vedanta-owned Sterlite copper smelting plant in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi was shut in 2018 amid protests by locals over environmental pollution.
The decision was announced after an all-party meeting where MK Stalin's DMK suggested that Sterlite "should provide oxygen for free" to Tamil Nadu. However, DMK stressed that ‘Sterlite can't use this permission to reopen the plant in any way.'
A government-appointed panel will monitor the functioning of the plant, officials said, adding that copper production won't be allowed.
