In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Achanta Sharath Kamal overcame a challenging start to secure a victory against the world number 13, Darko Jorgic of Slovenia, at the WTT Singapore Smash. The seasoned Indian paddler, aged 41, staged an impressive comeback after losing the first game, to win the match with scores of 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, advancing to the last 16.

Sharath, currently ranked 88th in the world, showcased his indomitable spirit and expertise by defeating Jorgic 3-1 in a gripping round of 32 clash. His journey to this remarkable victory began in the qualifying rounds, where he faced and defeated notable opponents including Romania’s Andre Istrate, Japan’s Yuta Tanaka, and Slovenia’s Deni Kozul to secure his spot in the main draw.

The Indian table tennis star, who has been the national champion 10 times, will now set his sights on the quarterfinals. He awaits the winner of the match between Egypt’s Omas Assar and Korea’s Lee Sang Su, hoping to continue his successful run in the tournament.

Sharath Kamal’s victory is not just a personal achievement but also a moment of pride for Indian sports, showcasing the country’s growing prowess in table tennis on the global stage.
