Novak Djokovic named top seed at Australian Open despite uncertainty over participation

Despite uncertainty around Novak Djokovic's participation in the opening Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open authorities have named the Serbian as the top seed in the Men's singles. The World number 1 who is also a 20-time Grand Slam champion is practicing in Melbourne for the Grand Slam.

Despite him winning the legal case against the Australian Government, there is still a threat over his participation as he is faces deportation due to non-vaccination. With Roger Federer skipping the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal has been given the 6th seed. 

Meanwhile, Djokovic in a long statement has apologised for the mix-up and said that it was the mistake on behalf of his agent while filling out the forms when he landed in Australia.

In the Women's draw, local favourite Ashleigh Barty has been handed the top seed in the singles. The two time Grand Slam winner is the current Number 1 in the WTA rankings and finished as the semi-finalist at the 2020 Australian Open.
