Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra could become India's flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Indian Olympic Association's Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said that Neeraj Chopra could lead the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony but that would depend on his availability.

The star athlete was also the flag bearer for the Indian contingent during the inauguration ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

The 24-year-old won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and became only the second individual after Abhinav Bindra to win a gold at the prestigious tournament for India. He is also the defending champion in the Commonwealth Games men's javelin throw event.

India will send a 322-member contingent to the Commonwealth Games that will be held in Birmingham from July 28-August 8.
