In what has become an all-too familiar sight, Neymar Jr left the pitch in tears after yet another injury — this time with a torn ACL and meniscus.
The Brazilian forward damaged his left knee in the first half of their 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss at Uruguay on Tuesday.
Neymar tripped and fell during a run in the 44th minute at the Centenario Stadium on Tuesday and was immediately surrounded by players from both teams as he held his knee.
He was carried off on a stretcher with both of his hands on his face. Richarlison came on to replace him. Neymar used crutches as he left the stadium.
On Wednesday, the extent of the injury was confirmed by his Saudi club Al Hilal, who said he would undergo surgery. The medical staff thinks that the 31-year-old could play again in 8-9 months.
Neymar was set to play in India for the group-stage ACL tie on November 6. Mumbai City FC had even booked DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as they had anticipated a large crowd. But all those plans are now up in flames.
