In a terrible blow to Senegal just days ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022, Senegal's star forward Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the marquee event in Qatar.

The Bayern Munich player sustained a knee injury in last Tuesday's Bundesliga match which his club won 6-1 against Werder Bremen.

Despite the injury, the star forward was named in Senegal's 26-man squad for the World Cup and Senegal's football federation. The officials had further said Mane would miss their 'first games' at the tournament.

However, on Thursday, after he was ruled out, Bayern Munich, his German club revealed that he underwent successful surgery in Austria.

Senegal begin their World Cup Group A campaign against the Netherlands on Monday, with games against hosts Qatar and Ecuador to follow.
