Amid speculations regarding Team India's next head coach, Australia great Ricky Ponting has emerged as one of the top contenders for the post, a RevSportz report said on May 14.
The Indian Express earlier reported that current CSK coach Stephen Fleming has been informally sounded out by the Indian cricket board to succeed Rahul Dravid.
Ponting and Fleming are being favoured by BCCI but the response from either side has not been positive so far, the RevSportz report said.
The report further stated that, both have been plying their trade in the IPL for a long time, they know Indian cricket inside-out, but the round the year job might prove to be a deterrent.
Fleming has been the head coach of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings 2009 while Ricky Ponting has been attached with Delhi Capitals since 2018.
The head coach will be required to stay with the Indian team for 10 months of the year and will be coach in all 3 formats.
Rahul Dravid, the current coach, will end his tenure in June with the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup and reportedly wasn't keen to continue beyond that citing family commitments.
While, former India cricketer VVS Laxman is another name doing the rounds, the RevSportz report stated that the NCA head coach is yet to apply. BCCI officials don't seem too keen to rope him in, disturbing the NCA set-up in the process.
The last day to apply for position is May 27. The next coach's term begins immediately after the World Cup on July 1, 2024 and will continue till December 31, 2027.
