India men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh will join ace Indian shuttler, PV Sindhu, as the nation's flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022.

The Indian Olympic Association had initially picked Sindhu as India's flagbearer but added Manpreet's name after being told by the organisers that one male and one female were needed.

While Manpreet was India's flagbearer at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, Sindhu led her compatriots at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain were the other two names in contention but a 4-member commission of the Indian Olympic Association comprising of acting president Anil Khanna selected Manpreet and PV Sindhu as leaders of the pack. Commonwealth Games start July 28 with the opening ceremony.

Neeraj Chopra, who was earlier appointed as the Flagbearer, had to pull out of the Commonwealth Games due to a thigh injury that he suffered during the World Athletics Championships finals.
