Sonia Gandhi appoints Navjot Singh Sidhu as chief of Punjab unit

Putting speculations to rest, Congress President Sonia Gandhi appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu as the chief of party in Punjab, where elections are scheduled later this year. 

Sidhu on Sunday had arrived in Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s home constituency, Patiala, to meet party MLAs and garner support for his elevation.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had said on Saturday that any decision taken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be acceptable to all.

Captain's remarks had come amid talk of Navjot Singh Sidhu being appointed chief of the party's state unit despite the chief minister's oft-stated reservations gathered force.
