Democrat Sarah McBride has won the election for the Delaware state senate to become the first openly transgender senator in America.
McBride has played a crucial role in the protection for LGBTQ community and their rights in Delaware. She has also lobbied and supported the Equality Act which Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden has promised to pass within 100 days if he is elected as president.
Furthermore, she defeated Republican Steve Washington to win the seat which opened following the retirement of the longest-serving legislator in Delaware history.
"We did it. We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you," McBride tweeted Tuesday night.
