According to online blog Bleeding Computer, Taiwanese computer maker Acer was hit by a ransomware attack, and the the hackers are demanding a sum of $50 million to restore Acer’s functionality. A ransomware attack encrypts all files on all computers in a network, which are then unavailable to access until the ransom is paid. The hacker group posted pictures of files stolen from Acer’s servers as proof of the attack, including financial spreadsheets and bank communication. The $50 million ransom demanded is the largest in any such attack ever. Acer did not directly confirm such an attack, but have said in a statement that they have reported ‘recent abnormal situations’ to law enforcement agencies.
