In the hopes of infusing new life into the Indian economy, the Government of India has opened up coal production in the country to private players. Coal production has always been a hot topic of debate owing to its business potential on one hand and adverse environmental effects on the other. However, to truly understand how privatization can alter both these aspects, it is essential for us to examine the past and present functioning of this mammoth industry. How has coal production evolved since our Independence? How integral is it to our economy now? What is its impact on our environment? With a watered-down EIA, can new projects be implemented while being conscious of the environment? In this video, we examine the coal industry in India from the perspectives of business and environment to understand the way forward.
