Over 8,000 tourists from Mussoorie and Nainital were sent back by the Uttarakhand Police over the weekend to prevent overcrowding during the coronavirus pandemic. The police have also set up border checkposts to regulate the flow of people visiting the popular tourist destinations.

The steps to control the influx of tourists were taken after images and videos of huge crowds at the hill stations emerged on social media. The violation of Covid protocols by not wearing masks and not maintaining physical distancing have intensified concerns about the third wave. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself admonished such behaviour.

The state govt has made RT-PCR test and tourist registration on an online portal mandatory for anyone travelling to Uttarakhand,.
