A big international effort is underway to evacuate the members of Afghanistan's national women's football team along with their families from Kabul. The evacuation is being done over fears of reprisal by the Taliban which strictly forbids women and girls to play sports.

The effort code-named Operation Soccer Balls had a major setback last week during the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport which left more than 100 people dead.

According to reports, there have been at least 5 failed attempts to rescue the girls along with the families in the past week. The team along with their families have been constantly moved around in Kabul for their safety as Taliban fighters are hunting them down.

In a successful attempt, most members of the team were evacuated to Australia last week while some still remain in Kabul with a faint hope of getting on to a flight for safety.
