Days after Kerala celebrated Onam, Covid-19 cases in the southern state are showing an upward trend
The state saw a 31 per cent spike in new Covid-19 cases in just 24 hours, government data showed on Wednesday. Kerala reported 31,445 fresh cases and 215 deaths in the 24 hour period. The positivity rate stands at 19.03 per cent.
The state government flagged an 'Onam spike' following the massive spike in coronavirus cases.
Ernakulam district recorded the highest number with 4,048 cases, followed by Thrissur, Kozhikode and Malappuram.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George had earlier called for "increased vigil" especially with the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant.
Kerala has been reporting more than or close to 20,000 cases almost every day since the relaxations for Bakri Eid celebrations in July.
Citing Kerala's example, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Wednesday cautioned other states about the upcoming festival season and advised them to take all measures to curb infections.
