Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with 11 other political leaders from the state met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put forward their demand of a caste-based census.

RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, ex-chief minister Jiten Ram Manjhi were part of the delegation.

After the meeting which lasted a little less than an hour, Nitish Kumar said the Prime Minister listened to all their demands carefully and they hope that their request will be granted.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that a caste census is necessary as social welfare schemes cannot be implemented properly if there is no data about people who need those benefits.

Demands for a caste-based census having been growing in Bihar after Centre stated in Parliament last month that a complete caste-based census would not be conducted and that only populations of SCs and STs will be counted.
