The Nigerian government has suspended Twitter ‘indefinitely’ in the African nation two days after the microblogging website removed President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweets threatening violent action against regional secessionists.
In the now deleted twitter thread, Buhari had referred to the country’s 1967-1970 ciivl war. He chided the youth for misbehaving and said people like him, those who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.
Twitter had removed the President’s tweets as it violated the company’s ‘abusive behaviour’ policy.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed announced the suspension on Friday and said that the action is in response to the persistent use of the social media platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence"
Twitter has called the suspension ‘deeply concerning’.
