'13 Reasons Why'
Two years after '13 Reasons Why', Netflix ran into trouble over the narrator Hannah Baker's graphic suicide scene. But as the chorus for the deletion of the scene became shriller, Netflix obliged. Brian Yorkey's teen drama also drew flak for portrayal of subjects including rape, drug addiction and much more.
'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl'
'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl' which saw Janhvi Kapoor in a titular role too entered court room. The India Air Force didn’t like how they were projected in the film based on the 1999 Kargil War. From accusing the makers of presenting misleading situation to stating that IAF was portrayed in bad light, the air force asked the censor board to ban the film, which refused to do so. The Delhi High Court recently refused to order Netflix to stop streaming the film.
'Bird Box'
The post-apocalyptic horror thriller 'Bird Box' too ran into controversy. First the audience raised alarm over the use of actual footage of a train accident that killed 47 people, forcing the platform to using chopping tool yet again. But a bigger trouble emerged as the Susanne Bier series inspired a Bird Box challenge. Netflix had to issue several requests as there were incidents where people attempted to do everyday activities while being blindfolded.
'Delhi Crime'
The fictionalized account of the Nirbhaya gangrape case didn’t go well with a Delhi police officer.
Anil Sharma, the station house officer at the Vasant Vihar police station argued that his character depiction as a 'dumb and slow' officer was fabricated for 'commercial profit'. The matter was sorted out of court as the police offer reportedly got an apology from the makers.
'Tiger King'
A real-crime documentary miniseries on zoo-keeper Joe Exotic, 'Tiger King' too had its share of uproar.
A wave of criticism followed after the initial success. One of Tiger King’s directors, Eric Goode, revealed that one of the real goals behind the docuseries was to encourage people not to give their money to sanctuaries, but animal rights groups were clearly not impressed.
