Neeraj Chopra's social media following reaches millions overnight after Olympic gold

After his epic throw of 87.58m that brought India Gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj Chopra has become the talk of the town, so much so that the 23-year-old athlete's fandom skyrocketed into millions on social media overnight.

Before his event started, Neeraj had about 100k followers on Instagram and over the next 24 hours, he had a follower base of about 2.6 million. Neeraj Chopra currently boasts of over 3.6 million followers on Instagram, a number that will only grow.

Indians were glued to social media, outranking countries like the US, Brazil and Philippines in terms of highest engagement on Facebook during the Tokyo Olympics 2020. 

Data released by Facebook shows, gold medallist Neeraj Chopra was the second most talked-about athlete on Instagram, after American gymnast Simone Biles.
