The Navy on Saturday said the Tricolour will not be hoisted at Sao Jacinto Island in South Goa on the occasion of Indpedence Day after objection from the islanders. Locals said they did not want the Central or state government to carry out any activities on the island due to their distrust of the authorities.

Goa CM Pramod Sawant took strong exception to the incident and condemned the behavior of the residents. He tweeted that such anti-India activities will be dealt with an iron fist and went on to request the Navy to unfurl the national flag as per plan.

Calling it an unfortunate and shameful incident, CM said that his government will not tolerate such behavior. However, the residents of Sao Jacinto islands clarified that they do not oppose the hoisting of the flag and added that they themselves will do it.

The distrust among the locals stems from the state govt's recent Coastal Zone Management Plan which they fear is against their interest.
