'Touchdown declared', a flight controller announced on Tuesday to cheers and applause as NASA's Osiris-Rex spacecraft touched the surface of asteroid Bennu.
The spacecraft was sent to collect cosmic rubble back to the Earth for further analysis but it would take another week to confirm how much rubble, if it all, was collected and whether another attempt would be needed.
Following commands sent well in advance by ground controllers near Denver, the spacecraft took 4.5 hours to make its way down from its tight orbit around Bennu
