The nip in the air feels great but with it comes various health risks. Besides causing cough, cold and throat infections, the winter season also increases the risk of heart attacks.

According to research published in the European Journal of Epidemiology, obesity and high blood pressure increase the risk of heart attacks in low temperatures by 30 times.

Reason behind increase in cases of heart attack during winters:

With the level of mercury falling, blood vessels start constricting. Due to this, lesser blood is pumped into the heart increasing the blood pressure which raises the risk of heart attack. Winters cause blood clotting which also could be a reason behind heart attacks.

How to take better care of your heart during winters

  • In winters, instead of early mornings, choose a time between 9-10 am for walks
  • Minimise your salt intake as salt slows down the function of the heart
  • Try to keep the body warm. Regular exercises and walks under the sun can be helpful
  • Control your cravings for deep fried food and food items rich in sugar. Heart-related diseases occur mostly due to increased cholesterol
