While sanitary pads have often been criticised for being harmful for the environment, a new study has revealed that they may have serious health implications too.
According to a study conducted by an NGO named Toxic Link, chemicals present in a sanitary pad may increase the risk of cancer and infertility in a woman.
As per the research, sanitary pads, the most commonly used product include toxic chemicals like carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors and allergens, which can be extremely harmful to health.
The study was done on ten sanitary pad brands which are most commonly available across India and traces of phthalates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found in all of the samples that have the potential to cause cancer.
National Family Health Survey has revealed that around 64 per cent of women aged 15 to 24 in India use sanitary pads.
