Sharp rise in the unemployment rate in rural areas and a marginal jump in job losses in urban India in the week ended 25 July data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed.

The national joblessness rate climbed to 7.14% in the week ended 25 July as against 5.98% in the previous week ended 18 July. However, rural unemployment took a sharp upward turn to 6.75% from 5.1% a week ago.

In comparison, there has been a marginal rise in urban unemployment for the same period. Urban unemployment rose to 8.01 per cent in the week ended July 25, rising marginally from 7.94 per cent a week ago.

The situation in the country’s job market continues to be tough as employment opportunities remain slim as ever since the country was hit by the second wave of the pandemic.
