The Indian government is involved in a series of consultations to scale down operations at its Embassy in Kabul. There has been an uptick of Taliban activity since Thursday. According to sources, security assessments had earlier been in favour of keeping the Indian Embassy in Kabul fully operational, after consulates in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif were closed and Indian staff flown out.
Elaborate plans have been prepared for the speedy withdrawal of diplomats from the embassy in Kabul and a dwindling number of Indian nationals, most of them workers engaged in development projects in Afghanistan. These plans include putting heavy lift aircraft of the Indian Air Force on standby round the clock, sources said.
