With unpaid loan of ₹7848 crore, watch who tops India's list of biggest wilful defaulters

The Union government furnished a list of India's top 50 wilful defaulters who collectively owe Indian banks nearly ₹1 lakh crore.

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on 20 December 2022, Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad revealed that the list is topped by fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi whose Gitanjali Gems didn't repay loans worth ₹7,848 crore.

He is followed by Era Infra with an unpaid loan of ₹5,879 crore, and Reigo Agro with a loan of ₹4,803 crore.

The top 50 wilful defaulters owe ₹92,570 crore to banks.

Banks have written off ₹11.17 lakh crore bad loans from their books in the last six years till financial year 2021-22, Parliament was informed.
