Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India Raghuram Rajan defended Rahul Gandhi on 18 January 2023, saying that the Congress leader is not "pappu" (fool), but a "smart, young, curious man".

Rajan, who had briefly joined Gandhi in his Bharat Jodo Yatra, told India Today that Gandhi has a good sense of priorities, the basic risks, and the ability to evaluate them. He had marched with the Congress leader in Rajasthan in December 2022.

The former RBI chief added that it's premature to think that India will replace China's influence on global economic growth.
