Congress leader Rahul Gandhi suffered a major setback on July 7 as the Gujarat High Court rejected his petition for relief in the "Modi surname" defamation case.

The High Court refused to suspend Gandhi's conviction in a criminal defamation case, which had led to his disqualification from the Parliament.

The Congress leader was sentenced to two years in jail by a lower court in Surat in March.

If the High Court had ruled in favour of Gandhi, then it could have paved the way for his return to Parliament.
