With the Bharatiya Janata Party labelling the Aam Aadmi Party "anti-Hindu", Delhi minister Rajendra Pal Gautam resigned from his post on 9 October 2022.

A controversy had erupted in the national capital after Gautam attended a religious conversion event on 5 October. The event saw hundreds of people converting to Buddhism and allegedly taking a pledge to not worship Hindu gods and goddesses.

Earlier, Gautam had said that the BJP was spreading rumours, and had apologised to those hurt because of the propaganda. While announcing his resignation, Gautam said that he did not want his party to suffer because of him. He said that it was a day of rebirth for him, and he would fight against oppression in society with more strength, and without any restrictions now.

Gautam had held the ministerial portfolios of Social Welfare, SC/ST, Cooperatives, and Gurudwara Elections.
