'Modi surname' remark: Rahul Gandhi found guilty of defamation, gets bail

A court in Surat has found Rahul Gandhi guilty of criminal defamation in relation to a comment by him linking the surname Modi and thieves. He has been sentenced to two years in prison but was immediately granted bail.

During an election rally in 2019, the Congress leader had asked why all thieves have Modi as a common surname. The case against him was brought by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.
