In a major setback to the INDIA bloc, BJP's Manoj Sonkar was elected as the mayor of Chandigarh on January 30. AAP and Congress had fielded a joint candidate, Kuldeep Kumar, against Sonkar.

BJP bagged 16 seats, INDIA 12, while eight votes were declared invalid. After the results were declared, a chaos broke out in the Municipal Coroporation House.

As part of the alliance, the AAP contested for the mayor's post while the Congress fielded candidates for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor posts.

The polls were originally scheduled for January 18 but were deferred after the presiding officer fell ill.
