One hundred lions died in Gujarat last year, state forest minister Murubhai Bera told the assembly on March 6.

Out of the 100, 89 died due to natural reasons while 11 died due to unnatural reasons.

Among the dead, 20 were male lions, 21 females while 58 were cubs.

These deaths account for nearly 15% of the lion population of the total 674 remaining as per the census in 2020.

The mortality rate of lions has gone down substantially compared to the last two years, the forest minister was quoted as saying.
