The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Tamil Nadu authorities to drop all the cases registered against the protestors involved in the anti-Sterlite agitation in May, 2018.
13 people were killed during the clashes in which the police opened fire on the protestors.
The bench consisting of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice T S Sivagnanam orally observed that firing upon the innocent public was a scar on Indian democracy and it should not be forgotten.
The court observed that the protest might not have been legal or legitimate, but citizens could not be fired at on behalf of a corporate body. It further said, the Tamil Nadu government should ensure that this kind of an incident does not happen again.
The hearing for the case has been adjourned till October 25.
