No more delays for ‘Squid Game’ Season 2! Netflix plans to release the show later this year, according to a shareholder letter. The South Korean hit series, created by Hwang Dong Hyuk, gained massive popularity in 2021, leading to a quick renewal for Season 2 and even a reality spin-off called ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’.
According to Variety, Netflix provided an update, stating, ‘In the upcoming year, despite delays caused by last year's strikes, we have an extensive and exciting lineup for 2024. Viewers can expect a selection of returning favorites including The Diplomat Season 2, Bridgerton Season 3, Squid Game Season 2, and Empress Season 2.’
Although the exact show date remains undisclosed, it's confirmed that the survival-themed K-drama will debut by year-end. Speculation arises that given the first season's September release, creators might target a similar timeframe to recapture the magic.
During Netflix's Q4 2022 earnings call, the show received the green light for renewal. The streaming platform's reality game spin-off, ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’, mirrored the original's theme and format, proving highly successful with Mai Whelan emerging as the winner.
Netflix's 2024 lineup also includes renewed unscripted series such as ‘Tour de France: Unchained Season 2’, ‘Love is Blind Season 6’, ‘F1: Drive to Survive Season 6’, and ‘Full Swing Season 2’.
New additions to the roster feature 3 ‘Body Problem’ (adapted from Game of Thrones showrunners' bestselling novel), ‘Griselda’ (starring Sofia Vergara, premiering this week), ‘The Gentlemen’ (from Guy Ritchie), ‘Eric’ (starring Benedict Cumberbatch), ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘Cien Años de Soledad’ from Colombia based on Gabriel García Márquez's novel, and ‘Senna’ from Brazil.
