Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film ‘Leo’ was released in theatres on October 19 and it opened to majorly positive reviews from the audience. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial delivered the biggest worldwide opening of the year across all Indian film industries.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, ‘Leo’ earned Rs 140 crore worldwide on its opening day.
There have been many controversies surrounding the action drama’s release in the Hindi and Telugu belts.
The film made Rs 63 crore nett in the domestic market and Rs 74 crore gross in India. These figures are lower than Shah Rukh Khan’s action thriller ‘Jawan’.
Tamil Nadu, which is the primary market for Vijay, did not hold any early morning shows and the film earned Rs 30 crore, followed by Rs 15 crore in the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana market.
In Karnataka, the film collected Rs 14 crore on the opening day, and in Kerala, ‘Leo’ earned Rs 11 crore.
‘Leo’ enjoyed 86.92% Tamil occupancy on its opening day, with the morning shows witnessing almost 86.35% occupancy and the night shows getting over 90% occupancy rate.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala had predicted that ‘Leo’ could do over Rs 100 crore worldwide on its opening day.
‘In India, I predict there is a chance of it doing Rs 70 crore on day one. Worldwide, it might do Rs 100 crore on the opening day, based on the current estimation,’ he told The Indian Express.

The film's screenplay is co-written by Rathna Kumar and Deeraj Vaidy.
It boasts an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Trisha, Arjun Sarja, Mysskin, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mansoor Ali Khan, Priya Anand and Sandy in important roles.
