Nandita Das’ ‘Zwigato’, starring comedian Kapil Sharma, received positive reviews from the audience as well as critics upon its release, but the film still hasn’t been released on OTT.
Now, ‘Zwigato’ has earned a spot in the permanent core collection of the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Reacting to this news, Nandita Das thanked the Academy and said that this is a happy reminder that the film is relevant.
The director-actor said that she believes only when stories are authentic and rooted in their own contexts, they transcend cultures and borders and become part of world cinema.
‘I am glad that it will be available in the library for students, filmmakers and writers. The overwhelming response that we have got for Zwigato from both audiences and critics has opened unexpected doors such as this,’ she wrote.
Taking a dig at OTT platforms, she wrote, ‘Hope OTT platforms are reading this! I think it’s time to give the audience the opportunity to see Zwigato.’
Nandita Das has co-written ‘Zwigato’ with Samir Patil.
‘Zwigato’ wasn’t a hit at the box office, but it received praise for Kapil’s impactful performance and its unique storyline.
Kapil also took to Instagram to thank the Academy. He wrote, ‘Thank you Academy for this honour. #Gratitude #Oscar.’
‘Zwigato’ debuted at the Toronto Worldwide Film Celebration in 2022. It was released in theatres on March 17, 2023.
