The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to build legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar memorial in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The memorial would be constructed at the cost of approximately around Rs 1200 crore. It will be an international level Music Academy spread across 2.5 acres at Kalina, Mumbai.
BJP had demanded to build a memorial in memory of Lata Mangeshkar at Shivaji Park, where she was cremated. However, the state's ruling Shiv Sena, which is an ally of the Congress, said there should be no politics over the issue.
Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on February 6, at the age of 92, leaving the entire nation in a state of mourning. A sea of followers joined the legendary singer's final journey from her Peddar Road residence to Shivaji Park, where she was cremated.
PM Modi paid floral tribute to Lata Mangeshkar at Shivaji Park and performed a parikrama (circle around in reverence) of her mortal remains. The PM expressed his condolences to Lata Mangeshkar's sister and singer Asha Bhosle, and the rest of her family.
