Filmmaker Karan Johar, who made his directorial debut with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, addressed the gender politics of the movie in a recent interview and admitted it was ‘flawed’.

While interacting with Nikhil Taneja on his chat show, ‘Be A Man Yaar’, Karan said, ‘The gender politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is very flawed. He (Shah Rukh Khan) liked the hot girl (Rani Mukerji), and the best friend, but just because she was not so-called hot he didn't love her. And when she became hot, he fell in love with her. It was like gender politics were all wrong. I would actually never want to do that again. Because, that was also me, just being impressionable by Hindi cinema, and not by the gender politics of the world. It was new to me. I didn't know it. I was only trained only by Hindi cinema’.

Karan even mocked Rahul’s famous dialogue 'Hum ek baar jeete hai, ek baar marte hai', and admitted that he ended up getting married twice.

‘That line makes no sense. And it is not applicable to the narrative of the film at all. He says 'Hume ke hi jeete hai. Ek baar shaadi karte hai, ek baar pyaar karte hai. (But) do baar pyaar bhi ho gaya, shaadi bhi. Toh I was like, ' What was I thinking, why did I write this?' But then I realised that the with the word 'conviction' aap uske saath chale jao, and your journey will end well,’ he said.

‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ recently completed 25 years of release and a special fan screening was attended by Karan, Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji.
