As 2022 comes to an end, we revisit the Bollywood films that failed miserably at the box office. A few films were made on a large scale but they couldn't recover their budget. This year has been a trying time for several filmmakers and producers, so, let's check out the list of Bollywood flops.
‘Shamshera’
Directed by Karan Malhotra, the period action drama marked the comeback of Ranbir Kapoor after a hiatus of four years. The film also starred Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt. The film shows how Khameran, a warrior tribe, was deceitfully imprisoned and enslaved in the fort of Kaza by Shuddh Singh. Their leader Shamshera tries to escape the fort, but he is killed. 25 years later, his son Balli tries to fulfill his father’s legacy and battles to his tribe’s freedom.
The film was reportedly made on a budget of ₹ 150 crores, but it managed only to earn ₹ 41.5 crores at the box office and was declared a disaster.
‘Liger’
Starring Vijay Devarakonda and Ananya Panday, the sports action drama focuses on a young man Liger who works his way up to find his dream spot in the MMA world. However, his life gets complicated when he crosses paths with Taniya. This pan-India film, directed by Puri Jagannadh, marked Vijay’s Bollywood debut and Ananya’s debut in Telugu cinema.
The film received negative reviews from critics as well as the audience and it managed to earn ₹61.80 crores at the box office. It was reportedly made on a big budget of Rs 100 crore.
‘Laal Singh Chaddha’
The Advait Chandan directorial starred Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film is a remake of the 1994 American film ‘Forrest Gump’.
It narrates the story of Laal Singh Chaddha, a simple man with a disability, who embarks on an extraordinary journey and meets many friends along the way. Ahead of its release, the film faced boycott calls over Aamir’s old remark on ‘growing intolerance’ in India. Made on a massive budget of ₹180 crores, the film made a gross collection of fewer than ₹90 crores.
‘Samrat Prithviraj’
The historical action-drama starred Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar. It is based on the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a Rajput king from the Chahamana dynasty. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manav Vij, Ashutosh Rana, and Sakshi Tanwar in pivotal roles. The film failed to pull the audience to the theatres and was declared a flop. It received mixed reviews from critics as well as the audience. Reportedly made on a budget between ₹150 crores – ₹300 crores, the film minted a gross collection of ₹90.32 crores.
‘Dhaakad’
Directed by Razneesh Ghai, the action film starred Kangana Ranaut, Arjun Rampal, and Divya Dutta. Agent Agni is on a mission to obtain information about Rudraveer, a human trafficker in India, and capture him. The assignment takes her down unnavigated routes.
The film bombed at the box office as it earned only ₹2.58 crores while its budget was ₹85 crores as reported by Indian Express.
