India’s legal system is struggling. Over 70,000 cases are pending before the Supreme Court, some for close to half a century. Nearly 76% of the country’s prison population is made up of undertrials, according to a 2022 report. Despite high case pendency, thousands of judges’ posts lie vacant at all 3 tiers of the judiciary.
Judicial reforms are sorely needed to clear India’s legal logjam. The Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have both expressed the need to spruce up India’s legal system.
