The death of 84-year-old tribal rights activist Stan Swamy, who was in jail on terror charges, has evoked sharp responses from international agencies.
The European Union's Special Representative for Human Rights and United Nations Special Rapporteur for human rights defenders are among those to have spoken out.
"The news from India today is devastating. Human Rights Defender and Jesuit priest Father Stan Swamy has died in custody, nine months after his arrest on false charges of terrorism. Jailing human rights defenders is inexcusable," Mary Lawlor of the UN body tweeted.
"India: I am very saddened to hear that Father Stan Swamy has passed away. A defender of indigenous peoples' rights," tweeted Eamon Gilmore of the EU.
In January, the United Nation's Human Rights office in Switzerland expressed serious concern over the condition of Stan Swamy and other human rights activists in India.
