Cyclone Gulab triggers 24-hour rainfall in Vizag, breaks cyclone Kyaar's record

Cyclone Gulab which reached Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening, triggered a 24-hour rainfall of 282mm in Visakhapatnam on Monday, setting an all time record for the month of September.

The last time the city recorded such heavy rainfall was in September, 2005 when cyclone Kyaar caused 194mm of rainfall in the city.

Cyclone Gulab made landfall around 6.30 pm on Sunday evening near Kalingapatnam in north Andhra Pradesh and had weakened into a deep depression by early Monday morning.

The Met department has issued a ‘Red’ alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall  over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Vidarbha in Maharashtra on Monday.
