From the remnants of a giant supernova explosion to a panoramic view of the Milky Way over French lavender fields, there’s no dearth of celestial beauty here! The Royal Observatory Greenwich has released the official shortlist of images for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021.
In its 13th year, the contest received 4,500 entries from amateur and professional photographers from 75 countries. Many of the images were taken by people in their backyard or unusual locations during the Covid-19 lockdown, said the organisers.

A winner will be picked from the 140 shortlisted snapshots on September 16 during a special digital awards ceremony. The competition aims to showcase the best in astrophotography from all over the world and the winner will get to display their work at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
