GST rates, rules and other changes that take effect from January 1

GST rule changes kick in from January 1, including higher rates for some items and bringing in more categories under the taxation ambit.

Here is what changes in the new year-:

 •  Hike in taxes for clothes and shoes: From 5% to 12% that is the jump in GST rate on your shopping bill for clothes and footwear from January 1.

 •  Uber, Ola et al to be under GST ambit: Riding away without service tax up to now transport aggregators such as Uber, Ola to also come under the GST regime now with a tax rate of 5%, so even your app-based taxi ride will become costlier.

 • Food delivery platforms to come under GST: This one will not at least make your food bill rise. Food delivery platforms will be made liable to collect and deposit GST on restaurant services supplied through them with effect from January 1. This is only a compliance shift and not an additional tax that has been added on.
