Seven Afghan civilians have died in the chaos near Kabul airport, the British defence ministry said as tens of thousands of people try to flee the country amid the Taliban takeover.

In a statement, the British defence ministry said that the conditions on the ground were extremely challenging.

They further said that they are doing everything possible to control the situation and ensure the safety of the civilians.

The Kabul airport has been the focal point for thousands of Afghans trying to flee the Taliban, which has led to stampedes and crushing injuries in the crowds over the past week.

British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the UK newspaper Mail on Sunday that, 'no nation will be able to get everyone out' before the U.S. deadline of August 31.
