Big Digital Boost: Cabinet gives nod for final leg of BharatNet connectivity

Digital India gets a big push ahead with the Cabinet approving the last leg plan for BharatNet. The BharatNet project which is in it's final phase aims for broadband to reach each village through PPP model. The implementation in 16 states (bundled into nine packages) is to be done on viability gap funding basis. Of the targeted 2.5 lakh gram panchayats (village blocks) covering more than 6 lakh villages, 1.56 lakh blocks have been covered by May 31, the latest data released by the government showed. The additional Rs 19,000 cr outlay will be used to connect the balance.
