Deaths due to Covid-19 in Bengaluru have increased by 95% in the past 30 days. While Bengaluru, as on May 18, had reported 10,012 Covid fatalities, 4,978 of them were in the past 30 days alone. It had taken nearly 13 months to report the first 5,000 deaths.
A bigger concern now is that fatalities among those below 49 years of age have increased. Deaths of those below 50 account for a sizeable slice, data shows. Deaths in the 20-29, 30-39 and 40-49 age groups have seen an increase of more than 100%. In the past 30 days, 1,090 people who died were below 49 years of age.
Experts suggest studies must be conducted to determine if a specific strain is affecting youth.
