Amid reports of his resignation, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday assured his countrymen that he will prevent further instability in the country and as the president his focus will be to prevent violence and displacement of people.
He said that the remobilization of the armed forces was also a "top priority", as Taliban fighters inched closer to the capital after routing the country's defences over the past week.
According to reports, the Taliban have captured much of northern, western and southern Afghanistan, and are now battling government forces just 11 kilometers south of the capital, Kabul.
In a recorded message, President Ghani said that his govt has begun extensive consultations at home and abroad and that the results will be shared with the public soon.
