The Japanese government has extended the Covid-19 state of emergency in Tokyo, where the Summer Olympic Games are being held currently. The capital city is witnessing a record surge in the number of Coronavirus infections.
PM Yoshihide Suga also announced the imposition of the state of emergency to 4 more areas apart from Tokyo. Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Osaka will come under the new declaration which will come into effect from Monday until August 31st.
The emergency measures that are already effective in Tokyo will remain as is until the end of the Paralympics that is scheduled to start on August 24th.

Tokyo has registered a record increase in fresh cases for 3 days in a row, this week. The Olympic host city recorded 3,300 cases on Friday. With 10,687 new cases registered on Thursday, Japan breached the 10,000-mark of fresh cases for the first time since the pandemic struck.
