The Taliban could overrun Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, within 90 days, as US troops withdraw from the country by the end of August, according to a Reuters report citing a US intelligence official.

The official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity said the new assessment of how long Kabul could stand was a result of the Taliban's rapid gains.

On Tuesday a senior EU official said that the Taliban now control 65% of Afghanistan and have taken or threaten to take 11 provincial capitals.

The speed of the Taliban advance has shocked the governments worldwide. Taliban controlled most of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, and was ousted for harbouring Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden after the Sept. 11 attacks. The group now wants to defeat the U.S-backed Afghan government and re-impose strict Islamic law.
